The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Voice Your Joy Together Now

Universi populi

For Christmas

Words and Music from Michael Praetorius' Musae Sionae, 1609

English Translation by the Rev. J. O'Connor

1. Universi populi,
Omnes jam gaudete
Et crudele vinculum
Laeti removete.

2. Tamquam sponsus hodie
Christus est egressus
De Maria virgine,
Filius progressus.

3. Qui nos captos hodie
Omnes liberarit
Et nos suo lumine
Pius illustrarit.

4. Huic omnes pariter
Laudes decantemus,
Et devoti gratias
Semper resonemus.

1. Voice your joy, together now,
Ev'ry ransomed nation;
Lighten ev'ry downcast
browsing your liberation.

2. Like a bridegroom going forth
This day came Christ Jesus,
Winning back estranged earth,
Son of Virgin Mary.

3. Us poor captives He sets free
On His birthday morning,
On our night He pours His day,
On our winter warming.

4. So before His manger's grace
Tune a merry chorus,
Each in his appointed place,
Heaven smiling o'er us.
