The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

To All Men A Child Is Come

Puer nobis nascitur

For Christmas

Words and Music from Michael Praetorius' Musae Sionae, 1609

English Translation by the Rev. J. O'Connor

Source: Richard Runciman Terry, Two Hundred Folk Carols (London: Burns Oates & Washbourne Limited, 1933), Carol #144, pp. 14-15.

1. Puer nobis nascitur,
Rector angelorum, :||
In hoc mundo pascitur
Dominus Dominorum.

2. In praesepe ponitur,
Foeno jumentorum,
Cognoverunt Dominum,
Christum regem coelorum.

3. Hinc Herodes timuit
Magno cum tremore,
Infantes et pueros
Occidit cum dolore.

4. Qui natus ex Maria
Die hodierna
Perducat nos cum gratia.
Ad gaudia superna.

5. Nos de tali gaudio
Cantemus in choro,
In chordis et organo,
Benedicamus Domino.

1. To all men a Child is come,
He the angels' Pastor, :||
Shares our food and shares our home,
Of lords He is the Master.

2. On the oxen's hay He lies
Cradled in their manger,
Though He's Lord of Paradise
They recognise the stranger.

3. Herod's fears are manifold,
He goes wild with terror,
Kills all boys of two years old
Lest He escape through error.

4. He that cometh Mary's son
Christmas day betiding,
May His grace our race bring on
To joy for aye abiding.

5. Tingling strings and organ joy
Blithe and solemn quiring
Sing we all in sweet alloy
Benedicamus Domino.

Note from Rev. Terry:

Wide differences will be noted between the Latin text of this carol and the more familiar setting in Piæ Cantiones. 1582.
