A Hymn for New Year's Eve or Day
Words: Rev. C. H. Wood
Music: H. S. Irons
Source: Carol 438, Rev. Charles Lewis Hutchins, Carols Old and Carols New (Boston: Parish Choir, 1916)
1. Sing the carol! Raise your voices!
Jesus our Emmanuel,
Seen of angels, gone to glory,
Came from heaven, as I do tell;
Jesus Christ, our soul’s salvation,
Son of God, and Virgin born,
Word made flesh, Yea, God Incarnate,
Came from heaven on Christmas morn.
2. Born at Bethlehem, died on Calv’ry,
Rose at Easter as I sing;
Born at Christmas, died in spring-time,
Flowers of heaven on earth to bring;
Man of Sorrows, Lord of Glory,
Pleading for us sinners, still!
Brothers, list the angels singing
"Peace on earth, to men good-will."
3. Laud and worship—songs of gladness!
Christmas bright and glad New Year!
Doff the old, put on the new man,
Christ as Judge will soon appear.
Laud and worship to the Father,
Songs of gladness to the Son,
Comfort us, Thou Holy Spirit,
While our earthly race we run.
