The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

O Jesus, True and Fervent Friend

For Christmas

Words: O Jesus soete aendachticheit, Dutch Carol of the 15th Century

Words translated by the Rev. John O'Connor

Music: Traditional Dutch Carol

Source: Richard Runciman Terry, Two Hundred Folk Carols (London: Burns Oates & Washbourne Limited, 1933), Carol #123, p. 23.

1. Lord Jesus, true and fervent Friend,
Who loves His own unto the end,
Away beyond our dim surmise
His presence shall refresh our eyes.

2. For never sung was sweeter song
Nor harmony more deep and strong,
No dearer fruit came forth from God
Than Jesus, flower of Jesse's rod.

3. The sinner, halt and lame and blind
In Him shall cure and welcome find,
And he who loves with all his might
Shall gain the summit of delight.

4. Then Jesu, do Thy will in me
Since all Thy will is sanctity.
The Spirit and the Bride call home
Amen, even so, Lord Jesus, come.
