Words and Music: Unknown

From Hugh Keyte and Andrew Parrott, The New Oxford Book of Carols (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1992)

1. Then Mary took her young son,
And set him on her knee;
Saying, 'My dear son, tell me,
Tell me how this world shall be.'

2. O I shall be as dead, mother,
As stones are in the wall;
And the stones in the streets, mother,
Shall mourn for me all.

3. And upon a Wednesday
My vow I will make,
And upon Good Friday
My death I will take.

4. And upon the third day
My uprising shall be;
And the sun and the moon together
Shall rise up with me.'
