1. Where have you been walking, shepherdess?
Where have you been walking, shepherdess?
Passing by a stable,
    In I chanced to spy,
Saw a scene of wonder,
    There before my eye.

2. Tell us what you saw there, Shepherdess?
Tell us what you saw there, Shepherdess?
Snugly in the manger,
    Deep within the straw
Wrapped with hands so tender,
    I a Baby saw.

3. Was there nothing further, shepherdess?
Was there nothing further, shepherdess?
Holy Mother Mary
    Gave the infant food;
By them Holy Joseph
    Cold and shiv'ring stood.

4. Was there nothing further, shepherdess?
Was there nothing further, shepherdess?
Just beside the manger,
    Two beasts kind and mild,
Ox and ass together
    Breathed and warmed the Child.

5. Was there nothing further, shepherdess?
Was there nothing further, shepherdess?
Yes, I saw three angels
    Come down from the sky,
Singing loud the praises
    Of the Lord most High.
