The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

When The Mother Gave Birth To This Child

Rosa d’argento e rosa d’amure - Trad. Neapolitan

Translator Unknown

When the mother gave birth to this child
All the Saints went into a counsel.

So great is the moon, so long was the journey
So great is the son on the waves of the sea.

How beautiful the sea, how beautiful the shore
The moon is beautiful as she walks along.

“The roses and the violets have blossomed
And my son is dressed in their beauty.”

With a star on her forehead and a flower in her hand
She is the Silver Rose and the Rose of Love.
