The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Star-lit Shadows

For Christmas

Words: P. S. Brooks

Music: G. Cranston

Source: Edgar Pettman, ed., The Westminster Carol Book (London: Houghton & Co., 1899), Carol No. 17, p. 23.

1. Star-lit shadows soft and still,
Lay on field and fold and hill;
Where their vigil shepherds kept
While their flocks in safety slept.

2. Bright rose night's loveliest gem
Over distant Bethlehem,
Hail'd by Magi from afar,
Judah's promised regal star

3. But the glory of the Lord
Was around those shepherds pour'd,
First upon their startled ear
Thrill'd the angels' word of cheer.

4. Ere the answering burst of song
Swell'd the azure sky along,
Teaching man with joy to hail
Christ the Lord in fleshly veil.
