The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Sleep, My Saviour, Sleep

For Christmas

Words: Rev. S. Baring-Gould

Music: "Infant’s Carol," Anonymous

1. Sleep, my Saviour, sleep
On Thy bed of hay
Angels in the starry1 heavens
Sing their joyful songs of gladness2
Till the break of day3

2. Sleep, my Savior, sleep,
On Thy bed of hay,
Ere the mourning Angel cometh
To the moonlit garden,4
Wiping tears away.

3. Sleep, my Savior, sleep,
Sweet on Mary's breast;
Now the shepherds kneel, adoring,
Now the mother's heart is joyous,
Take a happy rest.

4. Sleep, my Savior, sleep,
Sweet on Mary's breast;
Crucified with wounds and bruises,
Bleeding, purple, stained, disfigured,
One day Thou wilt rest.

Notes:

1. Or: spangled Return

2. Or: Sing their gladsome Christmas carols. Also: Sing their joyful Christmas carols. Return

3. Or: Till the dawn of day. Return
