The Shepherds

Words: Peter Cornelius, German
Translator Unknown

Music: Peter Cornelius

Carol 727, Rev. Charles Lewis Hutchins, Carols Old and Carols New
(Boston: Parish Choir, 1916)

Compare The Shepherds (Henry Vaughan)

1. Shepherds watching their sheep;
Nightly vigils they keep;
Long in the meadows the shepherds are waking,
The shepherds are watching and waking

2. There an angel of light
Brought the glad tidings that night:
“Christ, the promised Redeemer appearth,
The promised Redeemer appeareth!”

3. Angels sing in the sky:
“Glory render on High,
And on earth peace and good will to all men,
On earth peace and good will to all men”

4. Speedy the shepherds go,
Seeking the stable low,
Giving praises to Jesus, the Saviour,
Giving praises to Jesus, the Saviour.
