The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Jesu On This Blessed Morn

For Christmas

"This Day, as Bridal of the Earth and Sky,
Marries our human flesh to the Most High;
The happy Issues of which glorious Match,
Blessings, through all parts of the world, despatch."
Dr. Sparke

Words: The Rev. Samuel Childs Clarke, M.A. (1821-1903) was sometime Vicar of St. Thomas-by-Launceston and Headmaster of Launceston Grammar School in Cornwall. The Rev. Mr. Clarke commissioned the tune from Arthur H. Brown.

Music: Arthur H. Brown (1830-1926)

1. Jesu, on this blessed Morn
Thou in Bethlehem wast born;
Once again we turn to see
Mercy meeting truth in Thee,
Mercy meeting truth in Thee.
When, blest Saviour, Thou didst come
From Thine high and heav'nly home,
Thou from sin didst bring release,
Joining righteousness with peace.
    Jesu, on this blessed Morn
    Thou in Bethlehem wast born.

2. They of old, 'mid darkness drear,
Did the songs of Angels hear ;
While, amid the gloom of night,
Brighlly shone that wondrous light.
Gentle Jesu, now we raise
Feeble notes of grateful praise,
As we tell that tale again,
As we sing that sweetest strain,
    Jesu, on this blessed Morn
    Thou in Bethlehem wast born.

3. Help us glory best to give,
By the Christ-like lives we live;
Learning thus of "peace on earth,"
From the story of Thy birth.
On the good and evil still,
Thou dost cause Thy sun to shine ;
May we strive to show good-will
Unto all, for we are Thine.
    Jesu, on this blessed Morn
    Thou in Bethlehem wast born.
