The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

In A Manger

The Russian Carol

By Carl Engel (1883-1944)

Harmony by Michael Mikhailovich Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935)

1. In a manger poor
Sleeps the Christ Child,
While His Holy Mother wakes
And watches, pure and mild;
And about them,
In peaceful slumber resting lie the ox and ass.
Thus the starry hours of night in silence pass.

2. But at last the shimmering
pale light of the new dawn
ushers in a day with promise bright.
Here is God's word,
made flesh to save all the people,
and this wondrous birth.
Has brought hope again
and joy up on this earth.
