Hosanna To The Highest Joy Betide
For Christmas
A Carroll
Words: Francis Quarles (1592-1644)
Music: William Knapp
Source: William Knapp, ed., Anthems for Christmas Day (London: Robert Brown, et al., 1744), pp. 20-21.
1. Hosanna to the highest Joy betide,
Th' Heavenly Bridegroom, And his Holy Bride.
Let Heav'n above be fill'd with Songs,
Let Earth triumph below,
For ever silent be those Tongues
That can be silent now.
2. Be ravish'd Earth to see this Contract driv'n,
I'wixt sinful Man and reconciled Heav'n;
Dismount you Choirs of Angels come,
With Men your Joys divide;
Heav'n never shew'd so sweet a Groom,
Nor Earth so fair a Bride.
3. All Glory be to God, to Man good Will,
God sent his Son, his Promise to fulfill;
Let all Mankind be fill'd with Mirth,
Their joyfull Accents raise,
And join with Angels at his Birth,
To sing a Saviour's Praise.
