The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

The Great Angel of the Lord

For Christmas

The Angel Gabriel

Words: Charles Wesley, Hymns on the Four Gospels: St. Luke, #1143. “There appeared unto him an angel of the Lord,” Gospel of St. Luke i. 11.

Source: George Osborn, ed., The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley. Vol. 11 (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1871), p. 102.

    The great Angel of the Lord
        Attends invisible,
    Ready to apply His word,
        His ordinance to seal;
    To the majesty of God
Presents His people's sacrifice
    Mix'd with the atoning blood,
        And fragrant through the skies.
