Come, faithful, raise the lay,
     Sing thou, heaven sonorous:
Jesus Christ is born to-day;
     Skip ye hills in chorus.

Word of God is born a Child;
     God, made flesh right lowly,
Mary hath to mother mild,
     Pure as Angels holy.

Shepherds run the babe to bless,
     Low in adoration:
Magi him with gifts confess,
     King of all creation.

Quiristers Angelick tell,
     Forth the Gospel-story:
Praise the incomprehensible
     Lion-lord of glory.

God the Father is full fain,
     God that cannot vary:
And his Son hath no disdain
     To be born of Mary.

Star the way denoteth right;
     Monarchs three adore him:
Herdman marvel at the sight;
     Nature joyous o'er him.

Ave! Maid without stain,
     Blessed above all other,
Antidote of Eva's bane,
     Thou art God's own mother

At the Father's will, it was thine
     On then knee to dandle
Christ, thy babe, and the divine
     Word of God to handle.

Hush! For holy mysteries
     Shun unseemly prying:
Simple faith, it magnifies
     Christ in Manger lying.

God's unfathomable ways
     Baffle human reason:
Come, with Mary Jesus praise
     At this merry season.
