The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Blow Ye The Trumpet, Blow!

Hymn III.

For New Year's Day

Words: Charles Wesley, Hymns for New Years Day (Bristol: Felix Farley, 1750)

Source: Charles Osborne, ed., The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley. Volume 6. (London: Wesleyan-Methodist Conference Office, 1870), pp. 12-13.

1.
     Blow ye the trumpet blow,
          The gladly solemn sound,
     Let all the nations know
          To earth's remotest bound,
The year of jubilee is come:
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!

2.
     Jesus, our great High-Priest,
          Hath full atonement made;
     Ye weary spirits rest,
          Ye mournful souls be glad,
The year of jubilee is come:
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!

3.
     Extol the Lamb of God,
          The all-atoning Lamb;
     Redemption in His blood
          Throughout the world proclaim;
The year of jubilee is come:
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!

4.
     Ye slaves of sin and hell,
          Your liberty receive,
     And safe in Jesus dwell,
          And bless'd in Jesus live:
The year of jubilee is come:
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!

5.
     Ye who have sold for nought
          Your heritage above,
     Shall have it back unbought, *
          The gift of Jesu's love:
The year of jubilee is come:
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!

6.
     The gospel-trumpet hear,
          The news of heavenly grace,
     And saved from earth, appear
          Before your Saviour's face:
The year of jubilee is come:
Return to your eternal home! **

Notes:

* In some later editions, this line was "Receive it back unbought."

** In some later editions, the refrain after the sixth verse was the same as the refrain following the other verses (e.g., "Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!").

This hymn remained popular with the Methodists, appearing in numerous hymnals including:

John Wesley, A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People called Methodists. With a New Supplement. (London: John Mason at the Wesleyan Conference Office, 1845), No. 645, pp. 590-591.
