A Christmas Song by Howard Glover

1. A song for merry Christmas!
It comes but once a year;
Of all the holidays that be,
To mem'ry 'tis most dear.

Chorus:
Around the festive board grouped
Are friends from far and near,
To celebrate the festival
Which comes but once a year.
And if on thy life's record
Some enemies appear,
Forgive them on this holiday,
Which comes but once a year.

2. Beneath the pendant garlands,
Around the "tree's" young boughs,
Give vent to all the hearth mirth
Which Christian joy allows.

Chorus:
Around the festive board grouped
Are friends from far and near,
To celebrate the festival
Which comes but once a year.
And if on thy life's record
Some enemies appear,
Forgive them on this holiday,
Which comes but once a year.

3. But at this blessed moment,
When mercy's soul reigns here,
Forget not, 'tis the Christian's task
To dry the suff'rer's tear.

Chorus:
To feed the poor, and clothe them, too,
The desolate to cheer,
Best sanctifies the festival
Which comes but once a year.
To feed the poor, and clothe them, too,
The desolate to cheer,
Best sanctifies the festival
Which comes but once a year.

4. Ah! still thou merry Christmas,
Come back in all thy sheen!
With mistletoe and holly bright,
Be all that thou hast been!

Chorus:
The games we played in childhood,
And years unchanged have seen,
Should not these signs of our belief,
Like that, be ever green?
The games we played in childhood,
And years unchanged have seen,
Should not these signs of our belief,
Like that, be ever green?
