The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Vox clara terris nos gravi

For Advent and the Vigil of the Nativity

Translation: A Thrilling Voice Rings Clear and High. Father Henry Ignatius D. Ryder, Birmingham Oratory, 1883.

Vox clara terris nos gravi
Somno sepultos excitat:
Umbrae facessant, nox cadat,
Salus adest mortalibus.

Venere tandem tempora;
Rorate coeli desuper,
Nobis Deum nubes pluant,
Justumque terra germinet.

Verbu Dei, splendor Patris,
Desiderate gentibus,
Novi minister foederis,
Mundo jacenti nascere.

Nox atra terris incubat,
Incumbit horror criminum;
Prodi salubre mentibus
Parentis e sinu jubar.

Sit laus Patri, qui Filium
Promisit orbi victimam:
Sit qui venit, laus Filio:
Quo sit caro, laus Flamini.

Amen.
