The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Non abluunt lymphae Deum

For Epiphany

Words: Matins Hymn from the Paris Breviary, by le Tourneux

Translation: God Needeth Not The Cleansing Wave. A paraphrase. Robert Campbell, of Sherrington

Source: John Henry Newman, Hymni ecclesiae (Publisher: Londini : Alexandrum MacMillan, 1865), pp. 53-54.

Non abluunt lymphae Deum,
Sed abluit lymphas Deus;
Carnisque contactu sacrae
Vim dat lavandi criminis.

Promissus ecce jam patet
Fons abluendis cordibus.
Res mira! tingitur caro,
Mentisque labes tollitur.

His tincta nam canalibus
Regis supremi purpura
Tinctos cruentat, et nivis
Instar dat esse candidos.

Foecunda sancto Spiritu
Virgo Deum nobis parit:
Foecunda sancto Spiritu,
Nunc unda nos parit Deo.

Mundi scelus qui diluis,
Jesu, tibi sit gloria
Cum Patre, cumque Spiritu,
In sempiterna secula.
