The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

Grates peracto jam die

Hymnus 14.

For The Season Of The Presentation Of Christ In The Temple.

English Translation: And Now The Day Is Past And Gone

Source: Rev. John Chandler, The Hymns of the Primitive Church (London: John W. Parker, 1837), pp. 142-143.

Grates peracto jam die
Deus, tibi persolvimus:
Pronoque dum nox incipit,
Prosternimus vultu preces.

Quod longa peccavit dies,
Amarus expiet dolor:
Somno gravatis ne nova
Infligat hostis vulnera.

Infestus usque circuit
Quaerens leo quem devoret:
Umbra sub alarum tups
Defende filios, Pater.

Oh! quando lucescet tuus
Qui nescit occasum dies;
Oh! quando sancta se dabit
Quae nescit hostem, patria?

Deo Patri sit gloria,
Ejusque soli Filio,
Sancto simul cum Spiritu,
Nunc et per omne seculum.
