The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

El Desembre Congelat

Words and Music: Traditional Catalonian Carol

El desembre congelat,
Confús es retira.
Abril de flors coronat,
Tot el món admira,
Quan en un jardi d'amor
Neix una divina flor.
D'una ro ro ro,
D'una sa sa sa,
D'una ro, d'una sa,
D'una rosa bella,
Fecunda i poncella.

El primer pare causà
La nit tenebrosa
Que a tot el món ofuscà
La vista penosa
Mes en una mitja nit
Brilla el sol que n'és eixit
D'una bel bel bel,
D'una la la la,
D'una bel, d'una la,
D'una bella aurora
Que el cel enamora.

El mes de maig ha florit,
Sense ser encara,
Un lliri blanc y polit
De fragancia rara,
Que per tot el mon se sent,
De llevant fins a ponent,
Tota sa sa sa
Tota dul dul dul,
Tota sa, tota dul,
Tota sa dulcura
I olor, amb ventura.

Editor's Note:

I am not aware of any translations in the public domain. A well known translation, The Icy December (first line: Cold December's winds were stilled), can be found in Walter Ehret and George K. Evans, eds., The International Book of Christmas Carols. Fort Lauderdale, FL: Walton Music Corp., 1963. An adaptation of this translation can be found in Hugh Keyte and Andrew Parrott, The New Oxford Book of Carols. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1992, #198.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir recorded a translation by Deems Taylor and Kurt Schindler under the title of "The Three Kings." It is on their LP/CD “The Spirit Of Christmas” (1959).

Other titles that I have encountered include "The Cold December" and "On December’s Frozen Ground."

Instrumental sheet music to “The Cold December” and 12 other carols may be downloaded from Sally DeFord Music, (site accessed September 30, 2006). An MP3 of this arrangement is also available at that page.
