The Hymns and Carols of Christmas

The Book of Christmas Hymns

London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1868

Note: At first glance at some of the titles on this list, the modern reader will likely ask "What???" There are several of the hymns in this book that are not usually sung at Advent, Christmas or Epiphany, such as Christ the Lord is Risen Today (Easter) or Day of Anger, That Dread Day (Judgment Day). However, in earlier times, it was not uncommon for a "Christmas" carol to include everything from the birth of the Savior to His Second Coming, and then to the Day of Judgment.

While I could exclude those hymns that are, strictly speaking, not Christmas hymns as we celebrate the Holy Day today, I wanted to keep them on the web site as a way to remind us of the longer heritages of our race.
