Luther's Passional (ID #6285673)

Especially at a time when literacy rates were low, the Passional was a popular form of instruction and devotion. It was Martin Luther’s belief that children and the uneducated were “more apt to retain the divine stories when taught by picture and parable than merely by words or instruction.” In his 1522 Personal Prayer Book, Luther included 50 pages of woodcuts, together with the brief scriptural passage describing the scene. In the 1522 edition, the woodcuts were commissioned from printer Hans Lufft. They were replaced in the 1529 edition with woodcuts from Albrecht Dürer. Unable to locate either of those sets of woodcuts, this re-creation used the woodcuts of Gustave Doré, the 18th century French artist.

Luther's Writings on Prayer: A Selection (ID #8182733)

Martin Luther was a very prayerful man. In addition to his writing dedicated to the topic of prayer – as well as his many prayers – he frequently cast an aside concerning prayer in his many writings. Luther  said that “... whenever I happen to be prevented by the press of duties from observing my hour of prayer, the entire day is bad for me. Prayer helps us very much and gives us a cheerful heart, not account of any merit in the work, but because we have spoken with God and found everything to be in order.”

The Lenten Sermons of Martin Luther, Second Edition (ID #8292354)

Throughout his life, Luther was not merely a professor or scholar, but was also a pastor and preacher to his community and his university, and his devotion to the welfare of his people ran very deep. From 1521 through 1525, the sermons that he delivered in the churches in Wittenberg were painstakingly recorded and then published as the Kirchenpostille, the Church Sermons. Ten years later, Luther delivered another series of sermons, the Hauspostille, the House Sermons. The sermons that touch on the Lent from both these series are included in this edition, intended as a source of Lenten devotions.

A Holy Heavenly Chime – The Christmastide Poems of Christina Rossetti (ID # 871797)
