Bing Crosby,
White Christmas
A classic. There is also an excellent two-CD collection
containing 44 of Bing's greatest Christmas hits is
Voice of Christmas, also highly recommended for collectors,
but a bit more expensive (discounted new, plus used copies, are often
available). Also consider
Bing Crosby's Christmas Classics , which includes the classic
1977 duet with David Bowie. Here are links to
25 Bing Crosby Christmas CDs.
Perry
Como,
Perry Como Sings Merry Christmas Music (1985).
15 great Como Christmas favorites. This CD does not include his touching
Ave Maria, however, his
Greatest Christmas Songs (1999) includes this song, plus 20
others. It's also a great collection. I've got five Como Christmas CDs,
and love them all. Here are links to
10 Perry Como Christmas CDs.
The Andy Williams Christmas Album (1963).
For those of a certain age, or who watch Public Broadcasting (there was
in 2002 a special featuring Andy Williams and the Williams Brothers),
the Andy Williams Christmas specials were a warm annual tradition. Also
excellent is his
Merry Christmas (1965). I have both, as well as 5 other
Williams and Williams Brothers Christmas CDs. Here are links to
14 Andy Williams Christmas CDs.
Nat
King Cole,
Christmas Song (1963). Ten beautiful songs performed by a man
possessed with a magnificent voice. His daughter, Natalie Cole,
also produced an outstanding CD of Christmas music,
The Magic of Christmas , which features a "duet" of The
Christmas Song with her father. It's probably my favorite rendition
of that great song.
Christmas With Julie Andrews A 14 song reissue of her 1982
classic, which includes memorable renditions of "Rocking," "In The Bleak
Midwinter" and "See Amid The Winter Snow." One of my favorites. Other
Christmas albums from Julie are
Greatest Christmas Songs (2000) and
A Christmas Treasure (re-release from 1968).
Barbra
Streisand,
A Christmas Album Her original 1967 Christmas album is simply
fabulous. Barbra's version of "I Wonder As I Wander" is hauntingly
beautiful. Her second album,
Christmas Memories (released in 2001), is also great. I
enjoy both during the holidays!
Mormon
Tabernacle Choir and Leonard Bernstein,
The Joy Of Christmas. One of my most favorite Christmas albums
ever. This re-release from 1963 includes additional bonus tracks. Other
MTC favorites include
Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir,
We Wish You A Merry Christmas,
Noel,
This Is Christmas (recording of a live performance),
and
Christmas Carols Around The World. Other favorites can be
found in the
Seasonal Music section of
Deseret Books.
Amy
Grant.
A Christmas Album (1993). Other excellent CDs from Amy are
Home for Christmas (1992) and
Christmas to Remember (1999). I could listen to her
renditions of Christmas classics all day (and have), as well as
high-quality contemporary compositions.
